Best Apps in the App Store and Google Play
Every month app analytics company Distimo is releasing data on the most downloaded apps (free or paid) and revenue numbers, in both major stores, Google Play and the Apple App Store (for iPhone & iPad), based on data gathered covering the full month of May on a globally aggregated level. Without too much introduction, checkout the scores.
At least in iOS, games rank highly both in terms of downloads and also as revenue. The global community of gamers will to climb from 1.21 billion to 1.55 billion by the end of 2013. This mainly generated by the big increase in the number of smartphones and tablets sold. Market researcher Newzoo estimated that the global gaming market will reach $86.1 billion by 2016. This includes all platforms, not just mobile.
When looking at aggregated revenue numbers on the major 2 stores, Apple leads the way surpassing Google. However, Google Play’s piece of the pie grew significantly over the past six months. While only 19% of the combined revenue came from Google Play in November 2012, this share went up by eight percentage points to 27% in April 2013. Two Asian markets (Japan and South Korea) were the main contributors for the growth in Google Play’s revenue share.
